Yahoo! TV Widgets Video Overview

Categories: Widgets — admin at 1:40 pm

Wanted to share an old screen capture of the Yahoo! Widget TV to give folks an overall idea of how the new Yahoo! Widgets look and work.

You will notice that at the bottom of the screen is a dock that displays widget snippets (dynamic icons). Once clicked, a widget opens up in a sidebar. Widgets can also enter a fullscreen graphical or video mode. The Connected TV environment comes with a Gallery Widget that is used to browse and add 3rd party widgets. Individual widgets feature a horizontal tabbed menu metaphor (very similar approach to the Widgetmatic 600 series). Each widget has a title area, a “Navigation Start Point” (usually where the content goes), a set of horizontal tabs (menus), as well as a global toolbar (at the bottom).

The process of TV Widget Development can be broken down into the following tasks: Design Tasks • Choose the TV Widget resolution you wish to support. o 1920 x 1080 pixels for widescreen viewing at full resolution o 960 x 540 pixels for viewing at a smaller resolution o If you support both resolutions this will double the number of images you create. • Choose a widget development methodology. o You can choose to work with the Yahoo! Widget Toolbox’s pre-packaged UI components. o You can create your own UI components, and use the Container API to make calls directly to the Yahoo! Widget Engine. o Refer to the section Development Methodologies for more information. • Follow the widget design guidelines to design the widget’s graphical and user interface elements: o Design your TV Widget’s icon for use on the About page and in the Widget Gallery. o Design your snippets. o Design your sidebars. o Design your fullscreen views. Implementation Tasks • Install the Widget Development Simulator so you can build and test your widget on your PC (or Mac). • Copy a template widget that closely resembles the TV Widget you have designed. • Establish your widget’s file structure. • Implement your widget’s metadata. • Implement the image dictionary to contain all images used by the widget. • Implement the widget functionality. • Support Internationalization by providing localized strings for the widget content. Testing and Deployment Tasks • Review the acceptance criteria checklist for completion. Refer to Appendix F: TV Widget Acceptance Criteria for requirements and guidelines for submittal. • Test the widget using the Widget Development Simulator. • Submit the widget to the Widget Gallery in development mode and download it to connected TV devices. • Submit the fully tested TV Widget to the Widget Gallery for approval.
