Application Spotlight: Code and Token Delivery Apps On Facebook

Here are some of examples of music and DLC (download content) code/token delivery and fulfillment applications. These applications fall into one of two categories:

  • Delivery/Generation - Generate unique token or codes that fans can use elsewhere (on their Xbox for example) to download content (DC), music or software. These unique codes are generated online through Facebook, a microsite or mobile device.
  • Fulfillment/Redemption - Give users ability to download music, download-able content or software based on a valid unique code, token or serial number by enter online on Facebook, mobile device or a microsite.

Additionally, to generate buzz and generate viral marketing, these application can feature "Like" or Share gates. These mechanism force users to either "Like" a Facebook, follower a Twitter account, or share a marketing message on popular social networks before they can access the application or the content/codes.

There are some recent examples of projects involving code generation or redemption:

GAMES: Metro 2033 Discount Code
This Facebook application available on the Metro 2033 allowed users to become fans before receiving a unique code they could use to get a digital copy of Metro 2033 for discount. The application was designed to generate only one unique code per users (regardless of number of attempts to retrieve it). The application had other security and tracking measures in place (cookies, session variables, IP address recording, i.e.) to prevent fraud or abuse.

GAMES: UFC 3 Alistar Overeem DLC Download
This Facebook application also featured a "Like-gate" that required users to become fans before they could access it. The application was also heavily branded and provided comprehensive information on the "prize" including videos, screenshots, fighting stats and other information. Users were able to sign up to receive token codes (when they became available at a late date). Token codes were delivered via our email token delivery application.

GAMES: Space Marine Sweepstakes DLC Token Delivery
This unique email-based code delivery system was developed to deliver DLC codes and tokens securely via email. The system eliminates waste by dynamically generating tokens when recipients respond to the email.  The application also provide statistics on open rates, the number of codes redeemed and other key stats.  Optionally end users are also able to proactively redeem their codes via Facebook or a microsite (embedded as an iframe).

MUSIC: Rodney Atkins/Kraft Music Downloads
This application had both a code generation and a music redemption engine as part of the overall solution. The code generation engine was made available as a iframe through country music sites such as CMT.  We also provided a secure music redemption and download that end users would use to redeem their codes.

MUSIC: Tom Petty
A part of their Mojo tour, Tom Petty and the Hearthbreakers sold special tickets that entitled fans to a free download of the entire album (fans essentially paid for it as part of their ticket price). Because most users purchased more than one ticket, and because it doesn't make sense to download multiple digital copies of the album, we came up with the idea of allowing fans to SHARE codes they weren't able to use/redeem with friends on Facebook. This unique application allowed fans to 1) redeem their codes for a digital download (delivered as a download or via email), 2) find codes associated with their email address (we were able to verify their email address via the Facebook API), and 3) share unused codes with friends on Facebook or Twitter.  The application in conjunction with the e-commerce back end was able to report these downloads to SoundScan, so they could be "credited" towards overall album sales.

MUSIC: Newsboys VIP Vault
We were responsible for generating over 20K unique secure access codes that the record label distributed (gave away with CD albums, sold online, and distibuted at events) that gave fans access to a VIP vault on Facebook. The VIP vault gave fans exclusive access to behind the scenes video footage, music previews and other exclusive content.  We have the ability to generate unique and secure tokens (in quantities up to several million) for projects.  These codes can be delivered digitally or physically to end users.
